Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s Thakurgaon-1 constituency has been declared

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency, represented by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has officially been declared vacant following his assumption of the office of president.

The Parliament Secretariat informed the Election Commission Secretariat about the vacancy in a letter sent on Saturday. According to the letter, the seat became vacant on Friday evening, when Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir assumed the responsibilities of the president.

Following the declaration, the Election Commission is now preparing to take the necessary legal and administrative steps for holding a by-election in the constituency.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission would first review the relevant laws and rules before proceeding with the election process.

“Since the seat has been declared vacant, we will now examine the relevant laws and rules before taking the next steps,” he said.

Under the applicable electoral provisions, a by-election must be held within 90 days of the seat becoming vacant.

The Election Commissioner also indicated that the commission intends to complete the process without unnecessary delay. With local government elections approaching, the Thakurgaon-1 by-election is expected to be organised quickly.

The commission is expected to announce further details, including the election schedule, nomination submission dates and other relevant information after completing its review of the applicable laws and regulations.
