Businesspeople Are Key Drivers of Economic Progress Md. Anwarul Islam, Chairman, Pure Holdings Ltd.

The role of businesspeople in a nation’s economic development and employment generation is immense. They do not merely manage their own enterprises; rather, they play a vital role in strengthening the state’s economy by creating new jobs, boosting investment, contributing to export and remittance flows, and paying regular VAT and taxes. Business leaders continue to serve as a key partner to the government in advancing the country.

Anwarul Islam, Chairman of Pure Holdings Limited, believes that the primary prerequisite for economic progress is a disciplined and corruption-free environment. In his words, “No nation can achieve sustainable progress without discipline. To move the country forward, we must say ‘no’ to corruption at any cost.”

He notes that businesspeople constantly face various challenges, with access to bank loans being one of the major hurdles. In many cases, despite having the necessary documentation and business capacity, entrepreneurs face numerous complexities in securing loans.

If irregularities and corruption in the banking sector are stopped and transparent, hassle-free loans are ensured for eligible entrepreneurs, the entire economy will reap the benefits.

When qualified entrepreneurs receive loans through proper channels, they can invest that capital into expanding businesses, establishing new industries, and generating employment. Conversely, granting loans to unqualified individuals through irregularities hampers loan recovery, increases default loans, and ultimately creates liquidity crises and other systemic issues in the banking sector. Instead of placing the blame solely on an individual officer or institution, the entire system needs to be made transparent and accountable.

Ensuring a business-friendly environment will encourage entrepreneurs to be bolder, leading to increased investment and reduced unemployment. Additionally, when businesspeople pay VAT and taxes in compliance with regulations, government revenue will grow. In other words, business growth does not benefit only the business owner—it directly links to the nation’s economy, job creation, and the improvement of general living standards.

We envision a Bangladesh where honesty replaces corruption, discipline replaces irregularities, and an entrepreneur-friendly environment replaces obstacles. Our greatest inspiration to move forward is the expectation that today’s new generation will elevate Bangladesh on the world stage with dignity through their intellect, skills, and innovative spirit.
